Farewell Ms. Janaszak

 Adding to the atmosphere and resources of the art room this fall has been Courtney Janaszak, come to be known as Ms. J (the second).  A student at UNI, she student taught with Miss Johnson (also Miss J) from the beginning of the school year until October 14th.  She will be missed!

7th grade Chinese Calligraphy

Students in 7th Exploratory Art started out this unit writing the calligraphy symbol for the year of their birth according to the Chinese callender.  Continuing to practice the form of each stroke students choose a word, name or saying to write and mount.  Their final piece was to write a descriptive word or name on a rock.  They sealed the lettering in with a spray on each rock so it will last longer.

Art 1 Blog Posting

Art 1 students will be required to post a photograph of at least one piece of art you've made this semester with an artist statement.

You will be graded on the following:  your photograph (angle of view, clarity, cropping), grammar, spelling, the artist statement and signing it with your first name and last initial.  There should be some substance to the content of your artist statement.

How to write an artist statement…Your artist's statement is a testament to your creativity and self pride in your work. Understand that communication about your work is a powerful tool for creative growth as well as for the viewer to understand where you were inspired to create what you did.
First begin with a simple statement of why you do the work you do, (not that your had to, or you only did it because it was assigned). Support that statement, telling the reader more about your goals that connect to your art work.  Next, tell the reader how you make decisions in the course of your work. How and why do you select materials, techniques, themes? Keep it simple and tell the truth.  Tell the reader a little more about your current work.  What inspired you?  Possibly how it grew out of prior work or life experiences. What are you exploring, attempting, or challenging yourself by doing this work?  Do you use some of the same themes?  Why?

Your 2nd 9 weeks Blog Posting/Artist Statement needs to be completed by Dec. 17, 3:00 p.m.

Glazing Mania!

We spent the morning glazing in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade exploratory classes.  There was a lot of excitement in the air with everyone anxious and imagining what their glazing efforts will turn out like after they're fired in the kiln!

6th Grade Secret City Drawings

At the beginning of the year, students learned art vocabulary words of:  Foreshortening, Shadow, Density, Overlapping, Size, Contour Lines, and Surface in this unit.  Then they put their knowledge of how to incorporate those words into their drawings, creating a fantasy land.  Here are a few examples of their efforts.
